Weekly Activities/ Day 2/ Activity 2

Activity 2: One of the most popular activities in Madrid, the capital city of Spain, is called ‘Bullfighting.’ It has been a part of Spanish culture for centuries. In bullfighting people called ‘toreros and ‘matadors’ fight with a live bull. The toreros do most of the fighting and, ultimately, capture the bull and tie it up. Once it has been caught, the matador joins the fight and kills the bull. Although most toreros and matadors are men, there are some women who also compete in the sport.
Not everyone supports bullfighting in Spain. In fact, about 30% of the population want it to be banned (stopped) completely. What do you think? On your blog tell us whether or not you think that bullfighting should be banned in Spain. Please provide, at least, two reasons to support your decision.

Answer: Yes, bullfighting should be banned in Spain

Reason 1: My first reason is because animals weren't made to be killed or captured. There are reasons why we need animals.

Reason 2: My second reason is because some people get injured and hurt. People do these kind of things for money or just to impress the audience.

Reason 3: My last reason is because it's cruel to an animal that has never harmed anyone and I think this is animal abuse.

  1. Hi Courtney!

My name is Willy and I'm part of the commenting team for the Summer Learning Journey programme.

It's a shame that only 30% of Spain's population want bullfighting to be completely banned, there needs to be more attention about this issue. I've read articles of people who have either been seriously injured or killed, and it's a fault on the sport for being such a danger!

I completely agree with your reasons, Courtney. Animals don't deserve to be killed for entertainment - the sport is really risking both the lives of the torero, the matador, and the bull. It's a win-lose situation.

Oof, this went a bit deep. But good work, it really got me thinking!

    1. *win-win-lose situation, more like, considering it's two on one generally.

  2. Hey Courtney
I agree with you, bullfighting should be banned. It is very dangerous and people could get killed. It is also not fair on the poor bull who dies. Great job!

  3. Hi Courtney,

Thank you for sharing your opinion about bullfighting. This is a great explanation about why you disagree with it. I like how you have given us three comprehensive reasons to back up your answer, well done!

I completely agree with all three of your reasons. Bullfighting is a sport that treats animals exceptionally cruelly. They are mistreated terribly leading up to the fight to help make it easier for the matadors, and often the bulls do not survive the fight.

I don't think people should be allowed to treat animals like this for their 'entertainment', so it's very sad that only 30% of people think it's a bad idea! Maybe if a few more people read your argument, then we could convince more people that bullfighting is a bad idea.

This is a really good blog Courtney, keep up the awesome work!
